South Coast’s First TEDx Event Brings Eleven Acclaimed Speakers to Discuss “Space in a Shrinking World”
Santa Barbara, CALIF. – This Saturday, April 17, Santa Barbara will play host to a gathering of artists, scientists, land use experts, and cause leaders, brought together by a new event called TEDxSB, that will discuss their views on the theme of “Space in a Shrinking World”.
This choice of theme reflects not only the challenges of globalization, but how the environment, adjusting forms of living/work/entertainment space, our interaction with each other, and the exciting new interactions of technology, entertainment and design happening in third dimensional environments are presenting challenges and solutions to people’s lives. TEDxSB is proud to announce our sponsors for our event on April 17th! In keeping with our desire to not only keep TEDxSB a low cost event, we wanted to keep the number of sponsors approached to a minimum. We also wanted to approach sponsors that fit the TEDx mold, and we feel like we couldn’t have asked for two better sponsors than ESRI and Java Jones Coffee.
ESRI is the world leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and has gone to great lengths to provide solutions to non-profits and government, and has corporate initiatives that include conservation and sustainability programs. Additionally, ESRI has many connections with Santa Barbara, especially in education.
Java Jones Coffee is a local Santa Barbara coffee chain that promotes and sells fair trade organic coffee. As they say on their website:
Our motto Passion, Possiblity and Promise is not just a flashy marketing strategy it is our way of life. We are committed to roasting, brewing and serving great coffee that has been sourced at all levels in a social and environmentallly friendly manner. To complete the circle of our commitment to our customers and our comunity we have developed a line of coffees for a cause.
As we said, we could not be happier to have these two sponsors working with us on April 17th.
TEDxSB is proud to announce our first (and main) round of speakers! We had the great fortune of gathering some of the Central Coast’s and California’s most dynamic and important speakers, and the planning team is beyond thrilled to have each and every one of them preparing talks for April 17. Our main round of speakers includes an astronomer, Santa Barbara’s Poet Laureate, two artists, two urban planners, two entrepreneurs, and an environmentalist, and many of our speakers are also published authors as well as being accomplished keynote speakers.
So who are they? Visit our Speakers page to read all about them!
If you haven’t requested an invite to attend TEDxSB on April 17 at UCSB, we strongly recommend that you do so as soon as possible, as we only have a limited number of invitations still available. To request an invite, please fill out the form on our Attend page or send us an email at tedxsb@gmail.com
Again, we are thrilled to have each and every one of our speakers, and we hope to be updating this list with a few more exceptional talents in the near future!
We just wanted to give you a quick update on where we are in the planning process right now. Right now we are working hard to confirm all of our speakers for TEDxSB. We will be posting the bios of confirmed speakers in March. Also in March we will be sending out attendee invitations for our April 17 event at UCSB. If you have already sent us a request to attend, rest assured that we are collecting all requests and that the first round of invitations will go out no later than March 10. If you haven’t yet submitted a request, we strongly urge you to do so by March 5, as we expect to have more requests than available spots by then. For urgent scheduling purposes you need to know if you will be invited, please drop us a line and we will consider each case on an individual basis.
Thank you for your continued support and please follow us on Twitter and Facebook for more updates!

We are happy to announce that the first ever TEDx event in Santa Barbara – TEDxSB – will be held in the first half of 2010.
